Brightway Partners with Suffolk County Board of Elections & League of Women Voters to Empower Voters with Developmental Disabilities

For the first time, Brightway Living & Learning, formerly known as Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), partnered with the Suffolk County Board of Elections to bring its new state-of-the-art touchscreen voting machine directly to adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Friday.

Over 50 participants from Brightway’s Adult Day Habilitation Programs met at the Smithtown site to receive hands-on training with the County’s new voting machines, giving them the opportunity to build confidence, ask questions and prepare to cast ballots in future elections.

Also partnering with Brightway was the League of Women Voters (LWV). A representative was in attendance to assist any participant in registering to vote. The LWV is a nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy.

“Every person deserves the opportunity to participate fully in our democratic system, and that begins with ensuring everyone has access to the tools and support they need to cast their ballot with confidence,” said Kim M. Kubasek, CEO, Brightway Living & Learning. “We are proud to partner with the Suffolk County Board of Elections and League of Women Voters to provide our program participants with hands-on experience and opportunities. This collaboration is an important step toward empowering people with autism and other developmental disabilities to exercise their right to vote and have their voices heard.”

Brightway invites supporters, families, and neighbors to walk side-by-side at its upcoming Walk and Wellness Festival on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Suffolk Credit Union Arena in Brentwood.

This major community health event will bring people together to celebrate 65 years of service and promote holistic health and wellness resources. To learn more about the event, register, or join a team, visit Brightway's Walk & Wellness Festival Event Page – brightwayny.org/walk.
